Frequently Asked Questions

We hope our website provides all the information you'll need to make the right decision for your horse or pony on their retirement or recuperation. We are more than happy to answer any questions or discuss any other aspects of your horse's stay with us

What happens if the grass dries up during the summer?

We manage our grazing to ensure that this doesn’t happen. Even during the driest periods we have known, including the summer of 2022, the farm remained green.

We are in Wales, after all.

Won’t my horse get rain scald without a rug?

If horses are well nourished, healthy and have access to good quality grass, their coats will do what they are supposed to, which is to keep them warm and to dry quickly. If we experience a ridiculously wet period (and it does happen in Wales) then we bring the horses into the barn and feed forage while they dry out. We have known one very minor case of rain scald, on one horse, in over 20 years.

How will my horse be introduced to the herd?

We have a large sand arena and round pen where we introduce new horses to individual members of the herd one at a time. Introductions are carried out calmly and at an unhurried pace. It takes the time it takes and your horse or pony will remain safe until the process is complete.

If my horse is turned out all the time, won’t he/she get mud fever?

The herd never has to stand hock deep in a poached gateway waiting to come in or out. They come and go as they please. There are poached areas in some fields but as the horses move around so much they don’t have to stand in it. We haven’t had a single case of mud fever since we put in the track system linking the fields to the barn.

What security do you have in place?

There are no rights of way or roads running through our property, which means your horse will never be disturbed by dogs or walkers. Our farm benefits from a single-access driveway, which is protected by an alarm and CCTV that we can access from anywhere at all times so we can check on them even if we are out. When we are on holiday we employ experienced, caring staff to cover for us.

What will happen at the end of my horse or pony's life?

We know from experience how difficult this time can be.

We will discuss your wishes in detail and set them down in your contract. Your horse won't read our contract but it is our solemn commitment to always put their welfare first.
